But you shouldn\u2019t jump ahead into the writing process immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your writing might come out unclear, and not make sense to the reader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can improve the quality of your articles by thinking of several things prior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some \u201cquestion and answer\u201d style points written by some experienced chief editors who claim using these points helps clear up and organise your mind to help you write smoother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To whom?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About what?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is it important?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should they want it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s good practice to routinely ask these before each time you start writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or at least that\u2019s what our editor-in-chief said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve never met them but I like to imagine them asking me instead, like some wide topic?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or rather, who would you like it to be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s good practice to set a specific target audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By having a target audience in mind, it\u2019ll be easier to visualise and communicate through your article, and draw in specific readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the target audience for this article could be:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018People who are starting a news section for their company\u2019, or<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018People who want to improve writing skills\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the needs and struggles of readers is a great way to know who to target for your articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I used the term \u201creader\u201d here, this could generally be anyone from a customer, shareholder, or even your own company staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s tempting to write to a general audience &#8211; like at a fair, or a presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in the vast ocean of the internet, people can choose what they want to read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing a vague, generic article can not only be more challenging, but also an ineffective way to spread ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"22-_What_is_the_article_about\"><strong>2.2- What is the article about?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you want to convey in this article?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What ideas do you want to share?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve decided on a topic, the next step is the contents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This part should flow naturally for most people, but it\u2019s still good practice to narrow down, focus and plan ahead to prevent yourself from getting side tracked or getting writer\u2019s block.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you were to write about<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018How to prepare a blog\u2019,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can explore potential contents by thinking you\u2019re on the track of knowing the topic, and what you\u2019re going to write about, it\u2019s important to know why you want to share it in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps you came across several people who have had a niche issue with a common solution?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you have a unique perspective for a common issue?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think introspectively, and refer to your motivations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Make it easier to create content for everyone\u2019,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Not just telling people to arrange their thought, but showing how\u2019,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To run an active blog page (bulletin or any regular writing smoothly) a writer must know how to organise your thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"24-_How_do_you_convey_your_point_across\"><strong>2.4- How do you convey your point across?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you communicate your ideas and points?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you speak to your readers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than a step, this section is more about the overall structure of the article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to think about the tone and pacing of the article based on who you wish to read it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The methods can be about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Including explanations of key terms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showcasing examples<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explaining step-by-step approach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Containing better?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of change should they feel?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about how your article could change the actions of a reader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it\u2019s an instructional article, is it easy to understand and put into practice?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ideal outcome would be for them to get better results, or have a clear(er) understanding of a topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from this, it\u2019s also good to write in a way that demonstrates to readers your perspective on what you are writing about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that information isn\u2019t too repetitive or irrelevant, to let readers feel comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps to visualise the reader\u2019s thought process from start to finish. As a writer, it\u2019s important to see yourself as someone that is communicating to their readers and not a blank piece of paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling a connection to your readers should make writing feel more natural and rewarding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"3-_Research_similar_articles\"><strong>3- Research similar articles<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More often than not, there is a competitor that has already written a similar article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may not necessarily be about the exact same topic, with the same structure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However they may share the same keywords with the article you are going to write.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can use these keywords to do some research in how your competitors are writing their articles, and observe their standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content that appears within the first 10 items (that are not adverts) often contain:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High user satisfaction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High search engine ratings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve looked through these articles you may notice a pattern &#8211; similarities and differences &#8211; with your content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These articles should be a reference for how to structure your content in a way that can favour both readers and search engines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, do your research with caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, these are references. You should not copy the same layout and contents exactly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I guess that goes without saying, but we\u2019ll mention it just in case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"4-_Decide_on_structure\"><strong>4- Decide on structure<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this step, you should create the structure for your blog post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s completely fine to change the structure or come up with it as you go, but it\u2019s also great practice to start with a general idea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving yourself a structure makes writing easier, you\u2019re less likely to get writer\u2019s block. It can also help you avoid redundant points and being overly repetitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to think of your readers\u2019 experience when you design your blog post\u2019s structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you progress through drafting your article, you\u2019ll likely deviate (at least a little) from your original plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to go back to the initial questions and answer section, and the structure, and you should be on track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019ve decided on the overall structure, it\u2019s time to start writing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"5-_Utilize_mind_maps_and_notepads\"><strong>5- Utilize mind maps and notepads<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having read through all the previous contents, perhaps you have lots of content you want to go through spanning several notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes are important to refer to during the writing process. In general, note down anything you can using an app, book, or whatever feels comfortable for you to access and refer to later on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can write about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions and answers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competition research<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Article composition<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help you remember and organise your article later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another tool you could use is a mind map app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may take a bit to get used to at first, but it can help you organise your topics further by giving you better visual representation of your thought process, and summarise them based on their relation to each point rather than a simple text document.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course a mind map is possible to draw out instead of using an app. Use whichever you feel has better retention for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we don\u2019t recommend voice memos for a long term, referential method for documenting notes. While it can be convenient, referring back to many voice memos is slow and inefficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for a mind map app, there are lots you can choose from available free online, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindmeister.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.mindmeister.com\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that I\u2019ve personally used in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"6-_Conclusion\"><strong>6- Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By now, you\u2019ve gone through the outline of some of the important steps when it comes to preparing before starting to write a blog post.
